Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument

The world's leading thinking styles assessment tool, the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument® (HBDI®) can improve both individual and team effectiveness.

Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument

The HBDI® assessment evaluates and describes the degree of preference an individual has for thinking in each of the four brain quadrants, as depicted by the Herrmann Whole Brain® Model, and can be used to explore its impact on how they perceive the world, how they act and behave and how they prefer to communicate.

When we are aware of the thinking styles of others, we can become more flexible in our approach and present information in a way that is compatible with a preference different from our own. In a team, we can learn to value the diversity of different thinking styles and use them to best effect.

Uses:

  • Build effective teams
  • Improve internal and external communication
  • Align individuals, teams and divisions with company values and objectives
  • Embed a culture of creativity and innovation
  • Increase sales by better engaging with clients
  • Manage change
  • Improve employee engagement and career alignment
  • Improve decision making, problem solving, and planning capability.

Belbin Team Role Profile

The Belbin Team Roles® assessment identifies in addition to functional roles, (e.g. Director or Sales; Director of Finance; CEO etc) team members’ contributions could also be described in terms of their 'Team Roles'.

Belbin Team Role Profile

The Belbin Team Roles® assessment was developed over many years of research by Dr Meredith Belbin. He identified that in addition to their functional roles, (e.g. Director or Sales; Director of Finance; CEO etc) team members’ contributions could also be described in terms of their ‘Team Roles’. The nine roles which were identified as crucial to the success of a team are:

Plant The ideas person
Resource Investigator The networker & idea developer
Monitor Evaluator The analytical
Shaper The dynamic & challenging
Coordinator The effective talent user
Implementor The loyal & task oriented
Complete Finisher The meticulous
Teamworker The caring & person oriented
Specialist The highly technical skilled & professional

Understanding Belbin Team Role theory ensures that the right person is in the right role and that the roles are organised and used in the correct order. For example it makes more sense to use the Plants (gifted at generating ideas) at the start of the project than in the middle or the end, whereas the Completer Finisher, whose gift for attending to detail may impede the progress of a project at the beginning, will provide an invaluable contribution in spotting errors and tying up the loose ends before delivery.

Uses:

  • Project Management Teams
  • Senior Team Development
  • Teams with a high degree of interdependence between members
  • Recruitment
"A team is not a bunch of people with job titles, but a congregation of individuals, each of whom has a role which is understood by other members. Members of a team seek out certain roles and they perform most effectively in the ones that are most natural to them."
Dr. R. Meredith Belbin

The Belbin Team Role Assessment is completed online and combines a self perception inventory (SPI) with 6 observer assessments (OA).

In a nutshell, Belbin Team Role reports give a common language to show clusters of behaviour that are needed in the workplace. The reports identify not only the strengths of the roles but the 'allowable weaknesses', which could be described as the price that has to be paid for the strengths. By identifying our Team Roles, we can ensure that we use our strengths to advantage and that we manage our weaknesses as best we can.
